鼎是我国青铜文化时期的代表，在古代被视为国之重器、权力的象征，至今人们仍有鼎崇拜的意识。历史上有禹铸九鼎的传说，许慎在《说文解字》里说：“鼎，三足两耳，和五味之宝器也”。传统的鼎有三足圆鼎，四足方鼎，又分有盖和无盖两种。最早是黏土制的陶鼎，后来是青铜鼎，到如今的玉鼎。现存于博物馆中的多是青铜鼎，陶鼎与玉鼎极少。
